Clay Adventures - adult/childFULL
Let your imagination run wild. Bring your adventures to
by creating them out of clay. Learn the basics of working with clay - coils, slabs, pinch pots and molds. Finish your
creations using glazes, colored slips and paints.

The Handmade Table - adult/childFULL
Design and make a series of dishes and accessories
your own dinner table. Plates, bowls, serving dishes, salt and pepper shakers, and more! You will have the most unique dinner table on the block when this class is done.

Clay GamesFULL
Use clay to make your very own board games: chess, checkers, backgammon, and more! Learn basic clay forming
and decorating techniques to create board games and game pieces that look like works of art. Then use your games to learn how to play like a pro!

Mosaic TilesFULL
Create a series of tiles of your
own design to make murals
and tiled forms. Work with
surface, form, and composition
to create works of art utilizing
methods practiced for
thousands of years. Finish your

Face Jugs and Portrait MugsFULL
You will learn about the quirky, funny, and sometimes scary looking “Face Jugs” from the southern United States. Using handbuilding techniques of coiling, slabs and molds, you will create your own mugs and jugs - and add personalities with funny faces.

Clay PlayFULL
Let your creative juices flow as you learn how to handbuild
using coils, slabs, pinch pots and molds. Then finish your work with innovative techniques in decoration and glaze application. You choose what to make.

Creatures in ClayFULL
Unearth your creativity as you dig into clay. Make a variety of funny creatures, scary monsters, aliens and more while you have fun experimenting with clay and learning new building techniques. If you can imagine it, you can create it!! Working with clay has never been so much fun.

Intro to the Wheel and Glazing Techniques
Cups, bowls, bottles, and vases: learn how to throw these - and other forms - on the potter’s wheel. In addition to developing the basic techniques in wheel-forming clay, you will have the opportunity to explore interesting ways to finish your pots using a variety of glazes and decorative techniques.

Printmaking Methods on Clay
Explore the traditional printmaking techniques of mono-printing, stenciling and stamping on both flat and three-dimensional surfaces. You will have the opportunity to learn and apply these techniques – as well as basic hand-forming skills in clay – to create pots and prints; ready for the wall, desktop or table.

Introduction to Glass FusingFULL
Learn the fundamentals of
glass fusing as you create
unique designs and projects.
You will have the opportunity to
explore a wide variety of glass
materials and techniques.
Experience the expressive
potential in this exciting medium to make window art, small jewelry pieces, magnets, and ornaments.

Advanced Techniques in Pottery and Glazing
Possibilities abound as you will be given instruction in a variety of forming methods and exciting new glazing techniques.
Finishing opportunities include engobes, Italian majolica, and high-fire glazes.

Raku Methods
Make a series of ceramic works to be fired in a raku kiln, a historic Japanese firing method in which pots are heated to 1900 degrees, pulled out hot and placed in a chamber full of combustibles. Learn about the process, the history, and the amazing results that can be achieved through this exciting firing technique.

Making Tiles and Mosaic Installations
Create a series of tile works – large and small - as you design and finish a number of murals and tiled forms. Discuss surface, form, and composition strategies as you create your works of art utilizing methods practiced for thousands of years.

Glass Fusing and Slumping
Flat glass, as well as functional plates and bowls, are all
possible as you explore introductory fusing techniques
and more advanced slumping processes. Expand upon the basics offused glass and discover the possibilities of using molds to create new forms and interesting shapes.

Claymation – Making Clay Come to LifeFULL
Learn the art and craft of modeling creatures, figures and environments out of clay and animating them into a short film of your creation. Through the use of fired clay sculptures and movable modeling clay characters you will produce and direct your own short story to be published on the web!

Make a series of ceramic works to be fired in a raku kiln, a historic Japanese firing method in which pots are heated to 1900 degrees, pulled out hot and placed in a chamber full of combustibles to modify glaze color and surface. Learn about the process, the history, and the amazing results
that can be achieved through this exciting firing technique.
The course will include instruction on the potter’s wheel for both the beginning and experienced student.

The Science and Art
of Clay and Glass
Through a partnership with the Coe College Department of Physics, The Ceramics Center will be offering a series of summer camps for children in Grades 1-12 in the science and art of clay and glass. Students will become acquainted, in an age-appropriate manner, with the physics and chemistry of ceramic materials (clay and glass) – and then make art objects in pottery and glass. Each class will be team-taught by experienced science and art teachers. The Coe College Department of Physics has garnered a national reputation as one of the premier undergraduate teaching programs in the science of glass materials in the country. The Ceramics Center is pleased to be able to bring this expertise to the art classroom.
The Science and Art of Clay and Glass:
Grades 1-4FULL
Make candy! Have some fun. And learn why sugar-based candy is an exceptionally good model for understanding glass. See glass made on the spot. And then make your own clay and glass objects. Working with experienced science
and art teachers, you’ll learn the science of glass, as well as beginning pottery and glass-forming techniques.

Learn the “magic” of Rupert’s
Drops – then make your own
glass ornaments, pendants and
sun-catchers. You’ll learn the
fundamentals of glass fusing
and the techniques necessary
to make your own glass artwork.
You will also have the opportunity to work with clay and glazes (a form of glass) to make useful and beautiful art items for the house.

The Science and Art of Clay and Glass:
Grades 9-12
Learn the fundamentals of glassmaking and the root of color in glass. A standard crucible and furnace will be used to demonstrate melting and the manufacture of different colored glasses. Learn the connection between the science of glass and glazes as you make and glaze your own pottery. You’ll learn how to use slabs to create a series of plates, bowls and cups - and have the opportunity
to experiment with both low-fire and high-fire glazing techniques to finish your work.
